Christian Devotions for the Thin Blue Line and the Communities They Serve

My mission is to inspire, uplift, and connect individuals on their spiritual journey by weaving together the wisdom of the Bible, the commitment of those with a badge, and the power of Jesus Christ.

The Mission

My goal for writing Christian based devotionals and publishing them on this website is to fulfill, in some minor way, the words of The Great Commission set forth in Matthew 28:16-18, “Therefore, go and make disciples.”

It is the intent that each devotion will encourage people to add depth to their relationship with Jesus Christ or will encourage others to take the first steps to grow closer to him as you read, reflect and pray upon their content. The Holy Spirit keeps prodding me to write and I hope he will keep prodding you ever closer to Jesus and become one of His disciples.

About the Author

Fred Ailes is a retired police officer who served with the Montgomery County Maryland Department of Police from June of 1972 until June of 1998. Upon graduation from the police academy, which at the time was a single classroom above the Silver Spring District Station, Fred was assigned as a Patrol Officer to the Bethesda District. After serving 8 years in Patrol, Fred became an Investigator with the Check and Fraud and then the Special Investigations Division’s Pharmaceutical Unit where he attained the rank of Corporal.  Following his promotion to Sergeant he served as a Patrol Supervisor; Station and Bureau Administrative Sergeant; Detective Section and then Vice Squad Supervisor. Upon his promotion to Lieutenant, he served as the Commander of the Bethesda Investigative Section before being promoted to Captain. While a Captain he was the District Commander for the Bethesda and then the Silver Spring Districts before being promoted to Major and assigned as the Chief of the Management Services Bureau. His final promotion was to Lieutenant-Colonel where he served as the Departments’ Deputy Chief responsible for its day-to-day operations before retiring in 1998.

Fred graduated from California State Teachers College in Pennsylvania with a BS in Education in 1969. He taught American History for three years at High Point Senior High School in Beltsville, MD before embarking upon his police career. During his tenure with Montgomery County, he attained his Masters of Science in Special Studies from George Washington University in Washington, DC. Fred is also a graduate of Leadership Montgomery and the law enforcement related Leadership Maryland programs. Upon retirement, Fred worked as a consultant before moving to his current home in Pennsylvania where he has engaged in volunteer work within King Street Church and his community.

Fred and his wife Emma have been married for 53 years and reside in Fayetteville, Pennsylvania. They have two married daughters, 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. Beside his devotional writing, Fred enjoys reading; is an avid golfer; enjoys bicycle riding-especially his new e-bike; and spending time with his wife and family.

Background for Writing

The idea of writing devotions based on my 26-year career with the Montgomery County Maryland Department of Police began to rattle around in my head several years after my retirement in 1998. The rattling intensified when I began to seek an ever-closer relationship with Jesus through daily prayer and Scripture reading.  During these intensely personal sessions with Jesus, the Holy Spirit began transferring the devotional thoughts from my mind to my heart. Despite my fear of embarking on a mission with no preparatory training, the Spirit patiently encouraged me forward. Now after writing approximately 500 weekly devotionals for my church men’s group and select friends, I have undertaken the quest to get them to a wider audience with the development of The Bible, Badge, and Jesus.com. It is proof that “with God all things are possible!”

Christian devotions are intended to take the reader on a private introspective journey to the core of their faith. That journey will enable them to develop a deeper and more intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. This  movement is triggered by the author using experiences drawn from his or her unique walk of faith in direct combination with the Word of God. I have humbly tried to achieve this purpose by openly sharing the role that significantly defined a large portion my life—that of a Police Officer.

Admittedly not a theologian or Biblical scholar, using prayer, my limited knowledge and a Bible Concordance provided by my dear wife’s Uncle Wilb, a retired Lutheran Pastor who is now in Jesus daily presence, I have sought to combine Scripture with my work as a cop. It is my hope that this combination will be useful for reflective meditation and prayer after each reading. Totally aware that no two faith journeys are identical, I have ended each devotion with a pause for reflection and short prayer to give the reader a chance to add their own personal touch to The Bible, Badge and Jesus!

I offer my heartfelt thanks to my life’s partner, Emma, for her never-ending support, encouragement, prayers and editorial skills, for without her these words and this web site would have never happened. Many thanks to my family, and to the fine men and women of the Montgomery County Maryland Department of Police—you are simply the best and it was a humble honor to have served with each of you as a Brother in the Badge. To the members of my Sunday School Class, Wednesday Night Men’s Group, and my select reading group, thank you for your words of encouragement to take my writing to the next level. I want to thank Thomas, Bryce, and the design team of Iconic Web Design for their diligent and creative efforts to bring The Bible, Badge and Jesus to life on line. Above all, I give all the glory and honor to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, for without their divine mercy, grace and love I am nothing and my words are hollow.

Your Brother in Christ and the Badge,

Fred
